Who wants to be the next YouTube Kid Rock Star!!!

Yes, we know that you, your spouse, your kid and the whole family and neighbour is going ga ga over the cute little 5 year old YouTube
sensation who is rocking a guitar like Beatles did 40 years ago! Now
your kiddo wants to take guitar lessons and is harassing you to
locate a promising teacher. But before you enroll her into the local
guitar class, here are some points to ponder over

1. How old is your kid?
8 or 9 year olds are not much trouble but a 5 year old needs special
attention which can be a drain on most music teachers. The younger
your child is, the more enthusiastic and patient her teacher needs to
be!

2. Buy the right guitar.
The right size, right handedness (left or right handed), right
hardware and good tonal quality. A cheap local guitar is a big NO. You
don't want those tiny fingers hurt! A Yamaha 1GL Baby guitar or a
Pluto, Granada or Havana baby guitar will be ideal

3. Do not pressure the kid!
Judging and pressurizing the child to demonstrate rapid learning could
be counterproductive. Every child learns at her own pace. Do not force
her to be "another brick in the wall". Creative pursuits like music
are self-driven.

4. Nor the teacher!
Bad idea to push the teacher too! Does not work.

5. Monitor the child's growth in a non-invasive way. Make recordings
of her favorite song at regular intervals and listen to them along
with the child and teacher. Encouragement at small improvements will
go a long way in boosting her confidence.

If you happen to be in Dwarka or nearby, do check out my friends at
Rouble's Guitar School or Dwarka School of Music for lessons in
Guitar, Drums and Keyboards.
